2005
Concept Development, Concept Models, Working Drawings in Vectorworks, Presentation Drawings created with Vectorworks, Photoshop, and hand drawings
This project began as a response to Henri Lefebvre's ideas of differential space. From the onset I was very concerned with creating space that allowed and encouraged the slippage, creases, smudges, and stains of inhabitation.
The site of this project is the Manchester Unity building, found in the heart of Wellington, New Zealand. The building links together two main streets, Wellington's retail "golden mile", Lambton Quay, and its business epicentre, The Terrace. At the time of this project the once office building was in the process of being converted to serviced apartments, whose floor plates focused on maximizing dollars per square meter, resulting in a very fragmented space.
My intervention endevoured to create a space in the city of Wellington that was activated 24 hours a day by various inhabitants. The program for this building included hotel rooms and apartments, 2 cafes, a fresh food market, and a bar.
